  • REMEMBER FACULTY!: The eLearning department is reinstating an open lab in the AVC classroom - the Visual Learning Lab (VLL) for your use in order to assist with any problems you may have with the various technologies we are using in eLearning (WebCT, Blackboard, Tegrity, etc.) The lab will be open for your use during normal business hours each Friday (unless we notify you otherwise). We will have laptops available for your use, and, if you have one, you can certainly bring your own. If you need to schedule another time, please contact Christine Wiggins.



    Our Instructional Designers, Russell Gann and Dr. Suhana Chikatla, will be hosting workshop seminars entitled "e-How". These seminars will be taking place starting in the summer semester and will cover various topics about the different technologies we use as a campus.



  • Health Sciences Tours: January 21st, 2011 & February 1st - 4th, 2011
  • Faculty from the Health Sciences Division came to the AVC for a tour and introductions to the eLearning and AVC staff. Each staff member presented items that can be included into a Blackboard course and how to incorporate that into their classes, both on and off campus.



  • Chat with the Chanceller: January 26th, 2011
  • Freida Hill visited Wallace State in Hanceville Wednesday afternoon for a community question and answer session with local business and political leaders about ways the two-year college system cold better serve the region.

    "I've been on this campus several times, and when I walked into this building [the new Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts] it was really a 'wow' moment," she said. "They have this artwork here because someone cared and believed in this college ... Community colleges are called that for a reason, and it's a symbiotic relationship between the college and community."

  • Blackboard Boot Camp C: November 18th, 2010
  • Corinne Hoisington from Central Virginia Community College came back to do the third and final installment of the Blackboard 9.1(Learn) Bootcamps. The main topics covered included using SafeAssign which allows an instructor to upload a paper the student has written to check it for plagiarism. Corinne also covered journals, discussion boards, blogs, and wikis. If you were unable to come, the recording is below.

  • Drake State visits the AVC: November 10th, 2010
  • J. F. Drake State Technical College from Huntsville, AL made a visit to the AVC center to see how the 3D center works and how they could put it to use.



  • The Story of the Hodges Meteorite: November 9th, 2010
  • Dr. John C. Hall, curator of the Black Belt Museum at the University of West Alabama and retired chief naturalist of the Alabama Museum of Natural History at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, shared his extensive knowledge about Ann E. Hodges (1923 - 1972) whom was the first person ever to be injured by a meteorite on November 30th, 1954. The meteorite, which weighs about eight and a half pounds is on permanent display at the Alabama Museum of Natural History at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Dr. Hall presented to numerous students in the Experience and Discovery Lab / Betty Leeth Haynes Theater.



  • Blackboard Boot Camp B: October 28th, 2010
  • Corinne Hoisington from Central Virginia Community College came back to do the second presentation on Blackboard 9.1(Learn). The main topics covered included creating assignments and tests with multiple question possibilities. The gradebook and its capabilities were also covered.   • The League of Innovations: September 28th, 2010
  • Wallace State Community College's AVC Facility makes the October edition of The League of Innovation in Community Colleges newsletter. The article can be read here or you can view the October edition of the newsletter and see Wallace State and the Advanced Visualization Center in the Member Spotlight here



  • Blount County Senior Day: September 15th, 2010
  • Seniors from Blount County High Schools were given a tour of the Advanced Visualization Center as well as other areas on campus. In the AVC, students were shown how elements from a traditional class could be reinvented to utilize 3D and allow for students to become immersed in their learning like never before. Students were also shown how they could become involved in projects with people from anywhere in the world by using one of the Telepresence units here on campus and were shown how they could utilize the AVC to do their own projects via a green screen and the 3D camera setups.
